This study focuses on using Early Health Technology Assessment (EHTA) to guide the development of More Stamina, a mHealth app designed to help people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) manage fatigue. The assessment evaluated the app’s usability, safety, and integration potential within healthcare systems, offering a roadmap for further development and market readiness.
What was the context of the study?
MS is a chronic neurological condition characterized by high levels of fatigue. Effective self-management tools are critical as much of the care occurs outside clinical settings. “More Stamina” is an mHealth application designed to support fatigue management for individuals with MS. Given the complexities of integrating digital health technologies into clinical pathways, we utilized Early Health Technology Assessment (EHTA) to guide its development and market readiness.
What did we do?
Using the Digi-HTA framework, we systematically evaluated the app’s attributes, including safety, usability, effectiveness, cost implications, and interoperability. This assessment provided a structured approach to address gaps in development and compliance with healthcare standards.
What did we find?
The app demonstrates strong usability and adheres to data security standards. However, further validation is necessary to establish clinical efficacy. Enhancements are recommended to achieve seamless interoperability with electronic health records and to refine the artificial intelligence algorithm for personalized recommendations. A development roadmap has been outlined to address these gaps.
Why is this important?
This study highlights how EHTA can preemptively address challenges in the development of digital health technologies, ensuring they are safe, effective, and aligned with healthcare infrastructure. Tools like “More Stamina” have the potential to empower patients with MS and improve their quality of life by providing tailored support for fatigue management.
