Exploring Mobile Apps for Multiple Sclerosis: A Systematic Review

We conducted a systematic review of mobile applications for individuals with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) to understand the current landscape of these digital tools. Searching major app stores, we identified 25 relevant apps from over 1,600 initial results. Most apps focused on providing information about MS and its treatments, with limited features supporting disease management or patient support. Our findings highlight a gap in mHealth solutions tailored to MS patients, emphasizing the need for more comprehensive and user-centered app development.

What was the context of our study?

MS is a chronic condition affecting the central nervous system, causing symptoms such as fatigue, mobility issues, and cognitive challenges. With mHealth technologies gaining traction in chronic disease management, MS patients stand to benefit significantly from digital tools. Despite the large number of health apps available, there has been little research into how many cater specifically to MS or how well they meet patient needs.

What did we do?

We systematically searched the iTunes App Store and Google Play Store using the term “multiple sclerosis” to identify apps related to MS. After filtering for relevance and removing duplicates, we reviewed 25 apps for their purpose, target audience, and the entities behind their development. The analysis categorized apps into key functionalities, such as disease information, management, and support.

What did we find?

The majority of apps (70%) provided disease and treatment information, while 25% included tools for disease management. Only one app offered peer or professional support features. Notably, none addressed physical rehabilitation, a critical need for many MS patients. Most apps were free, with development driven by small and medium-sized enterprises. The involvement of healthcare professionals in app development was minimal, raising concerns about content credibility and clinical relevance.

Why is this important?

Our review exposes a significant gap in mHealth offerings for MS, particularly in areas like physical rehabilitation and emotional support. Addressing these gaps could empower MS patients to manage their health more effectively and improve their quality of life. Future app development should involve healthcare professionals and adopt a patient-centered approach to meet the complex needs of this population.
