Designing Digital Health Solutions During Pandemics: A Multidisciplinary Workshop

We developed a workshop aimed at exploring the unique challenges and opportunities in designing digital health and wellbeing technologies during pandemics. Using a multidisciplinary approach, the workshop introduces participants to a pandemic-stage matrix and fosters discussions on adapting design methods to rapidly changing societal needs. The initiative emphasizes the importance of user-centered design while navigating constraints like restricted user interaction during outbreaks.

What was the context of our study?

Pandemics, such as COVID-19, have underscored the need for adaptive digital health solutions capable of addressing evolving challenges. These events affect societal dynamics, user behaviors, and healthcare delivery systems. Designing effective digital health technologies under such conditions requires innovative methods that account for rapid changes in user needs, public health priorities, and restricted physical interactions.

What did we do?

We created a workshop for the 11th Nordic Conference on Human-Computer Interaction (NordiCHI ’20) to guide researchers and practitioners through designing health solutions during pandemics. Participants engaged with a pandemic-stage matrix and collaboratively explored design opportunities for stakeholders such as users, governments, and companies. The workshop combined case-oriented exercises, focusing on specific pandemic scenarios, with context-dependent reflections on adapting design methodologies.

What did we find?

The workshop highlighted the value of a structured pandemic-stage framework to inform design decisions. Participants identified practical ways to modify existing design tools for remote user research and prototyping. Key insights included the importance of flexibility in design processes, fostering participatory approaches despite physical restrictions, and addressing the unique needs of stakeholders at different pandemic stages.

Why is this important?

As pandemics continue to shape global health priorities, the ability to design responsive and inclusive digital solutions becomes increasingly critical. This workshop serves as a model for fostering innovation and collaboration across disciplines, equipping designers to navigate the complexities of health technology development in crisis settings. The outcomes provide actionable strategies for ensuring technology remains relevant and user-focused during pandemics.
