We analyzed the rapid adoption of teleconsultation systems during the first wave of COVID-19, emphasizing the need for sustainable implementation beyond the pandemic. Our insights reveal that while these systems proved valuable in maintaining healthcare access, there is a risk of lacking integration into broader organizational structures. We propose strategies to ensure teleconsultation remains effective, addressing design, training, and policy challenges.
What was the context of our study?
The COVID-19 pandemic transformed healthcare delivery, with social distancing measures pushing many institutions to adopt teleconsultation as a primary method of patient care. While teleconsultation helped reduce exposure risks and maintained continuity of care, its rapid implementation raised questions about its long-term sustainability and impact on healthcare systems.
What did we do?
We reviewed the implementation and outcomes of teleconsultation systems at Erasmus University Medical Center in the Netherlands during the initial COVID-19 wave. Using lessons from this experience, we analyzed the challenges of integrating teleconsultation into healthcare workflows and proposed a framework to ensure its sustainability.
What did we find?
Teleconsultation use surged during the pandemic, particularly video consultations. However, as restrictions eased, telephone consultations returned to pre-pandemic levels, while video consultations stabilized at higher-than-previous usage rates. Key challenges included a lack of training for healthcare professionals, limited stakeholder engagement, and inadequate policy frameworks. Many systems were hastily implemented without addressing data security, patient privacy, or integration with existing workflows.
Why is this important?
Teleconsultation has the potential to revolutionize healthcare by improving access and reducing costs. However, for this potential to be realized, systems must be designed for long-term use. Our findings highlight the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration, robust training programs, and comprehensive policy development to ensure teleconsultation becomes a sustainable and integrated part of healthcare.
